      The natural phenolic compounds have received increasing interest in the last years, since a great amount of them can be found in plants and consumption of vegetables and beverages with a high level of such compounds may reduce the risk of development of several diseases due to their antioxidant power, among other factors. Alkaloids are secondary metabolites originally defined as pharmacologically active compounds, primarily composed of nitrogen (Croteau et al., ; Ziegler & Facchini, ).They are synthesized from one of the few common amino acids: lysine, tyrosine and tryptophan. More t alkaloids, including more than families, have been identified in plants; and around 20% of the ‘species.
