This book by Neil Thomas does just that. This is not a deep history book by any stretch of the imagination, but Thomas provides a solid overview of warfare & tactics in various periods (from ancient times to modern)/5(21). Memoir 44 is easily the best soft introduction to wargames.

Even if he is old or mature enough to try something more complex, the abstractness and flexibility of the system will help to introduce more concepts relevant to wargaming without a lot of extra investment.

“Introduction to board wargaming” by Nicky Palmer () is a must read btw. TSR was hardly into wargaming at the time. While miniature wargames was mostly a British affair, the board wargaming designs were really the only thorough decent boardgame designs in the 70’s and 80’s and they were present in common retail toy shops.
